Qualification and supervision
The qualification and supervision of STEOP mentors takes place in close cooperation with the CTL and the respective degree programmes in which the STEOP mentors will work later.
Compulsory
- Group leading workshop ‘Anleiten von STEOP-Mentoring Gruppen’: eight hours at the start of the semester (basic qualification by the CTL, oriented towards the respective degree programme; dates and times are communicated in good time by the individual degree programmes).
- Consultancy course oriented towards the respective degree programme, over the entire semester (by degree programme).
Voluntary
- Additional qualification workshops for student multipliers (QUAM workshops) on a wide variety of themes: writing, reading, learning, methodology and academic work, use of digital tools, working with/on yourself and working with others.
STEOP mentoring education
Was tun STEOP-Mentor*innen?
STEOP mentors are students qualified by the CTL who (want to) pass on their knowledge to first-semester students. As a STEOP mentor, you will lead a 1.5-hour mentoring session in a team every week in which you
- Support first-semester students with starting university
- Provide information on the curriculum and plan your own course of study
- Share ‘insider knowledge’ about your degree programme
- Give first-semester students the opportunity to network Provide information and experience on STEOP exams
- Teach learning and reading strategies Usually, two
STEOP mentors supervise a group of a maximum of 25 first-semester students.
Requirements for application
Requirements for application as STEOP mentor:
- You must first have successfully completed the introductory and orientation period (STEOP) of your degree programme.
- Your field of study must offer STEOP mentoring or the extension curriculum “Peer Mentoring in Theory and Practice”. (A list of degree programs that do this can be found further down the page)
Become a STEOP mentor
Degree programs advertise the opportunity to become a STEOP mentor. The call for applications to become a STEOP mentor in the following semester usually takes place at the end of the current semester. For work in the coming winter semester:
- Call for applications in June of the current summer semester For work in the coming summer semester
- Call for applications in January/February of the current winter semester

What do STEOP mentors receive?
When participating in EC Peer Mentoring
- 15 ECTS credits (on completion of all 3 modules)
- Experience in guiding and advising groups
- Sharpening your social skills, confident appearance
- Deepen your knowledge of your own professional culture
- Theoretical and practical consolidation
- You will get to know colleagues and expand your network in the field
- You will receive a certificate of participation from the CTL for your activity as a STEOP mentor for your CV
- You will have the opportunity to gain further qualifications on various topics free of charge in the QuaM workshop program (including confirmation of participation)
- After completing the entire extension curriculum, your training and practical experience will be confirmed with a certificate for your application portfolio.
STEOP mentoring (without EC)
- Experience in guiding and advising groups
- Sharpening your social skills, confident appearance
- You will get to know colleagues and expand your network in the subject area
- You will receive a certificate of participation from the CTL for your activity as a STEOP mentor for your CV
- You will have the opportunity to gain further qualifications on various topics free of charge in the QuaM workshop program (incl. confirmation of participation)
