Getting started as a university teacher – basic qualification for staff new to teaching
What is it about?
The concise offer for newcomer teachers (predocs) supports you in getting started with university teaching. You will learn about the framework conditions of teaching at the University of Vienna and receive support in planning your course (e.g. with regard to learning outcomes, teaching/learning activities and assessment). In addition, you will also have the opportunity to network with colleagues during the training course.
What is the target group?
The programme is compulsory for newcomers to teaching (predocs). It is compulsory for university assistants not holding a doctoral degree (predocs) in their first year of employment, if they are already involved in university teaching (see article 49, para. 3 and para. 8 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff), as well as for university assistants not holding a doctoral degree (predocs) in their second year of training, if they are involved in university teaching for the first time. They must complete the workshop before or during their first teaching commitment. The workshop is not compulsory for predocs who have already taught at a university before. It is also open to interested lecturers of the University of Vienna who have the opportunity to attend the workshop on a voluntary basis.
Our five offers
The basic qualification is clustered according to disciplines. We offer three thematic specialisations in German, an interdisciplinary training course in English and a STEM-specific offer in English.
This differentiation should guarantee target group orientation as far as possible, and support newcomers to teaching in the transfer of theory into practice in their own courses. The individual offers deal with different teaching/learning cultures and methods relevant to the field, such as case-based learning or laboratory teaching.
As an interested teacher, you are free to choose the offer that best suits your approach to teaching. You do not have to select the basic qualification for your original discipline.
