Learning outcome of the extension curriculum

The objective of the extension curriculum (EC) ‘Akademische Schreibkompetenz entwickeln, vermitteln und beforschen – Ausbildung von Schreibmentor*innen’ (Developing, Teaching and Researching Academic Writing Competence – Training Writing Mentors) is to train students, in the context of the writing mentoring programme of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) of the University of Vienna, to become student writing mentors, to employ them in bachelor's programmes in a variety of settings, to supervise their activities and to develop their academic writing competence in a research-based way.

Students who have completed the extension curriculum have reflected on themselves as academic writers, are familiar with process-oriented writing didactics and basic practices of text analysis as well as the fundamental approaches to German as an academic language, and have deepened their knowledge in selected areas of writing didactics and writing research.

They are able to communicate writing methods and writing strategies to their peers, and give feedback in accordance with the stage of the writing project in question and the needs of the person or group concerned, and assist teachers by means of standardised services for communicating academic writing. They are familiar with the key genres of academic writing.

They have planned and carried out a research project in a team setting, under supervision, and have appropriately communicated it both verbally and in writing, in the relevant genres. They know the process of academic publication and are able to take part in peer reviews. They have used their knowledge as a basis for further practical writing didactics.
The extension curriculum addresses students who have trained to become writing mentors in the context of the writing mentoring programme at the CTL and who want to develop their own academic writing competence in the context of a research process.

Application procedure for the extension curriculum

All bachelor's students at the University of Vienna (except teacher education students) who have completed the introductory and orientation period (STEOP), as well as two writing-intensive courses, can apply.

Specific formal requirements for the extension curriculum:

  • You are a degree programme student at the University of Vienna.
  • You have successfully completed the introductory and orientation period (STEOP).
  • You have passed at least two writing-intensive courses.
  • You have submitted all the required application documents.

Please note: The prerequisite for enrolling to this EC is that you must not have a greater number of open (= uncompleted) ECTS credits than are defined for your curriculum. If your curriculum permits 30 ECTS credits from extension curricula and you have already registered for two extension curricula of 15 ECTS credits each, you either cannot participate in the writing mentoring EC or in one of the other ECs, i.e. there must be a sufficient number of ECTS credits ‘available’. This prerequisite does not apply to completed extension curricula.
After the selection procedure, we will register the participants.

Teacher education students can apply for the course in the winter semester and, provided that places are available, for the seminars of Modules 2 and 3. The ECTS credits can be recognised in the context of elective courses (‘Wahlbereich’).

Please apply with all the required application documents.

These will be checked by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) of the DLE Studies and Teaching to ensure that they meet the formal requirements for participation in the extension curriculum.

The selection committee consists of a representative of the SPL10 and a representative of the CTL. The committee ranks the applications received, taking care to ensure that a broad spectrum of disciplines and language repertoires is covered. Suitable applicants will be invited in groups of 5-6 people for an interview lasting approx. 40 minutes.
