Writing mentoring

Writing mentoring is a support service for students at the University of Vienna who would like to develop or improve their academic writing competence.

Writing mentoring in brief:

  • for bachelor's and master's students
  • Group activity
  • 1.5 hours per week

 What happens at writing mentoring?

Writing mentoring takes place in a group setting. These groups are facilitated by students who have trained at the CTL to become writing mentors. The groups meet once a week for a 1.5-hour session. In these sessions, you work on subjects prepared by the writing mentors (see semester plans), and in addition, the participants (‘mentees’) can ask questions on academic writing or get feedback on texts they have written.

Participate in the writing mentoring offer to
  • input on many aspects of academic writing: academic language, text production, approaches to sources, text revision, text structure, presentation of arguments, etc.;
  • help with ‘problems’ concerning academic writing;
  • communication on an equal footing;
  • an opportunity to ask questions (that you’d rather not ask teachers);
  • enjoy a friendly and collegial atmosphere.
  • get feedback on short text passages;

 Who can take part in writing mentoring?

Writing mentoring is open to all bachelor’s and master’s students at the University of Vienna.

 Dates

You can either consult thewriting mentoring calendar to find a group that fits into your schedule or use the list of all degree programmesi to choose a group at your department. If the group at your department meets on a day that is inconvenient for you or if your department doesn’t run its own group, you are free to simply join another group.

No registration required. You do not need to take part in all meetings of a group (though taking part in more than one session is advisable).
