Subject-specific STEOP mentoring

This type of STEOP mentoring is oriented towards the characteristics of the respective degree programmes.  The STEOP mentors, who have been trained at the CTL, have already completed the STEOP of their degree programmes and can thus give their first-semester peers (the 'mentees') specific tips and recommend proven learning strategies, based on first-hand experience. The mentors themselves receive guidance from an experienced teacher of the degree programme in order to keep abreast of the latest information about the STEOP concerned.

What's going to happen?

During the semester, STEOP mentors organise and plan regular meetings with their mentees. At the meetings, they answer questions concerning the entry phase, examinations and the curriculum, and give advice on successful reading and learning techniques. There will also be room for general questions about studying at the University of Vienna and social contacts among students. In this way, students are encouraged to build networks and form study groups; this makes it easier to get to know new colleagues, particularly in times of distance learning.

FAQs on subject-specific STEOP mentoring

/

  • There are no free places in the mentoring groups. What should I do?

Please contact the STEOP mentors of your degree programme or your directorate of studies (SLP).

  • Where, and in which format, do the sessions take place?

Depending on whether they will/can be held online or on site, either online tools of the University of Vienna (e.g. Collaborate, BBB, Zoom, etc.) are used, or the sessions take place at a University location.

  • What is the concrete setting of the sessions?

Sessions take place weekly or biweekly, with a duration of 1.5 hours, in peer groups facilitated and planned individually by at least two mentors.

  • Does STEOP mentoring include an assessment of achievements, homework, etc.?

STEOP mentoring is, as such, not oriented towards achievement, but active participation is welcome.

  • Who is in charge of STEOP mentoring?

The individual subject-specific STEOP mentoring sessions are administered by the respective directorates of study (SPLs). The mentoring sessions are planned and run by peer mentors who have been trained at the CTL. At the CTL, the programme is coordinated by Frano P. Rismondo.

  • I’d like to become a STEOP mentor myself. What do I have to do?

The degree programmes that include STEOP mentoring usually announce STEOP mentoring vacancies at the end of the current semester, for mentoring during the upcoming semester. As a formal requirement, prospective mentors must have completed the introductory and orientation period.
