Supporting student research in teaching

Overview

... student research.

Further reading

An important part of every studies is student research, whether in the context of an (introductory) seminar, bachelor’s seminar or a work placement.

As a teacher, you can make a significant contribution to the success of student research and improve its quality by providing support at important points.

The CTL is happy to support you here with its resources and expertise.

Developing student research

Good student research begins with the research question. This should be clearly formulated, complex, open and above all feasible.

  • 'Research question' handout: Criteria of a good research question, connection between research question, theory and method
  • 'Planning pentagon' handout: Planning essential elements of a research project
  • 'Four-step' handout: Formulating a good research question, objective and hypotheses, reflecting on and justifying choice of methods
  • Online lesson (Lesson 2) of the MOOC What am I doing here? Getting my bachelor's paper done!" ('Was mach ich hier eigentlich? Die Bachelorarbeit schaffen!'): Contents are finding topics and narrowing these down, research process and research design, research question, text type synopsis

Implementing student research

Under Student Reseach Hub, the CTL brings together a range of services that support students in their research work.

  • Methods camp: At the Methods camp, students get the opportunity to talk about their research design, ask general questions and reflect on their research methods with trained student multipliers from the CTL
  • Analysis trolleys: Do your students work with large amounts of data and need to analyse these? In the Student Research Hub, students can borrow one of four powerful computers on which many programs for analysis (including STATA, Atlas.ti, SPSS) and also programming (Python, Jupyter, Overleaf) are installed. (Mon-Fri, 9:00-17:00)
  • Stalls for group work: If students need to work together in research groups and need space for this, they can reserve a place in Student Space 1 for several hours between 9:00 and 17:00 (also possible in combination with an analysis vehicle)
  • Open Science - coming soon

Ensuring visibility of student research

  • UR: Das Journal: ‘UR: Das Journal Studentische Forschung an der Universität Wien’ (UR: The Journal Student Research at the University of Vienna) (in German) is an open access journal published by the CTL. Starting in the winter semester of 2022, students’ research papers will be published twice a year here in cooperation with interested departments. If you are interested, please contact Erika Unterpertinger (erika.unterpertinger@univie.ac.at).
  • Student conferences: We are happy to help you host student conferences by providing resources, rooms and expertise.
